Pleasing God, in unjust suffering -

Pleasing God, in unjust suffering. 1 Peter 2:18-25

Message: The true disciple of Jesus Christ, has in Him the model, the instruction and the training to patiently, in a way pleasing to God, deal with unjust suffering.

Instruction and Encouragement in Times of Suffering - Message: Instruction and encouragement to Christians, in living under the will and grace of God in a holy way - joyful - with the hope of glory in Jesus Christ, in the midst of sufferings - hostilities, gifts and /or future.

1 Peter 2:18 Servants, be obedient to your masters with all fear. And not only if he is good and cordial, but also if he is bad.

Servants - 'oiketes', everyone who is under the authority of the head of the household; servant, domestic, referring to domestic or domestic servants …

In our culture, Peter's guidelines apply to how we behave towards those directly over us in society (employers, bosses, administrators, teachers, etc.). (Constable, p. 56)

There are times when even "doing good" (doing what pleases God), the disciple of Christ will go through unjust sufferings caused by "wicked" people, in the family, church, corporate, academic world, etc.

Why patiently bear unjust suffering?

I. Because it is pleasing to God, 2:19, 20

2:19a For this is pleasing to God, that someone should endure sorrow, suffering unjustly, …

They patiently endure 'hupophero', to suffer for being under; bear patiently, bear patiently; stay, i.e., remain, not withdraw or flee; to preserve: under misfortunes and trials, to hold fast to faith in Christ; suffer, endure bravely and calmly: mistreatment, mistreatment…

Pleasant ('charis') to God - 'charis', grace, that which gives joy, delight, pleasure, …, to God; what is due to grace 3a) the spiritual condition of one governed by the power of divine grace.

In this context, it means what counts with God's approval, or what pleases Him, and not what He gives (Constable, p. 57);

Because of your conscience toward God - The fact that this is how God wants us to behave is reason enough for obedience.

The praiseworthy motivation for patiently enduring unrighteous suffering is the believer's awareness of being in the presence of God. No credit is given for being punished for doing something wrong. It is the patient enduring of undeserved suffering that finds favor with God, because such behavior demonstrates His grace. (Raymer, R.M., Vol. 2, pp. 847–848)

Why patiently bear unjust suffering?

II. Why we should follow Christ's example, 2:21-25

2.21 For to this you were called (‘eklēthēte’, 1.15; 2.9)… - refers to patiently enduring suffering for the sake of doing good, following the example of Jesus Christ, who suffered in our place.

2.21 Leaving example … 'hupogrammos', written copy, which includes all the letters of the alphabet, given to beginners as an aid in learning to draw them; example presented to someone; refers to a writing or drawing that a student reproduces.

2:22 He committed no sin, nor was deceit found in his mouth.

See Mk 14:53-15:32 - Christ was judged and condemned unjustly.

He was humiliated, mistreated, beaten, and endured one of the worst deaths, the death of a cross. A shameful and cruel death.

What was the example set by Jesus Christ?

2:23 For he, when insulted, did not retaliate with insults; when he was mistreated, he made no threats, but gave himself to the one who judges righteously, 24 bearing our sins in his own body on the tree, so that we, dead to sins, might live for righteousness. By his wounds you were healed.


Jesus Christ "patiently endured the pain and humiliation of the Cross. God was justly judging our sins that His Son bore (cf. 2 Cor 5:21). In the Greek, the words "our sins" are near the beginning of the verse and therefore stand out emphatically, while He Himself emphasizes Christ's personal involvement.His death makes it possible for believers to free themselves from the penalty and power of sin and live for Him: that we might die for sins and live for righteousness (cf. Rom. 6:2, 13) Christ suffered so that Christians could follow His example, both in suffering and in living righteously. Peter made a general reference to salvation: by His stripes you were healed (Isa 53:5). This does not refer to healing physical, for the past tense of the verb indicates completed action, "healing" is an accomplished fact. The reference is to salvation. The suffering of Christ (lit., "wound"; mōlōpi, "band left by a scourge", refers to the scourge of Jesus) and death brought about the "healing", the salvation of every individual who trusts Him as their Saviour. (Raymer, R.M., Vol. 2, pp. 847–848)

Conclusion / challenges

Steps to face injustice in a healthy and victorious way (*)

1. Recognize the root of injustice

Rom 1:18 The wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of human beings who, through their unrighteousness, suppress the truth.

There is injustice because human beings have rejected divine standards, and preferred their own human standards…

2. Recognize two of the roots of human suffering

A. Our own sins, v. 20

2.20 For what glory is there, if, having sinned and being punished for it, you bear it patiently?

There are situations, not always, in which suffering is the result of our sin, our wrong choices and decisions...

B. The sins of others, v. 18 ("bad")

2:18 Servants, be obedient to your master with all fear. And not only if he is good and cordial, but also if he is bad.

Sometimes we suffer because of the wickedness, the perversity of others.

3. Relate to the cross of Christ, v. 24; 2 Cor 5.21

2:24 he himself bore our sins in his own body on the tree, so that we, dead to sins, might live for righteousness. By his wounds you were healed.

We die in Him, to sin... Our attitude must not be that of promoting injustice... We must not live in the practice of evil, being instruments of the suffering of others...

We live through Him, for justice... Our attitude must be that of promoters of justice, being an instrument of divine blessings, such as peace and well being, in each other's lives.

4. Turn to "Pastor and Bishop - Jesus", v. 25

2:25 Because you were like sheep going astray; but now you have converted to the Shepherd and Bishop of your soul.

A. Admit your rebellion, v. 25 - “they were strayed”; Rom 3.10-12

B. Accept your calling, v. 21 - “you were called”; 1 Pet 1.15; called to discipleship, to communion and submission...

D. Follow in His Footsteps, v. 21 - "leaving an example for you to follow in his steps"; 1 Jn 2.4-6; Mt 11.28,29

E. Surrender your righteousness and care, v. 23 - "but he gave himself up to the one who judges righteously"; v. 25 "...but now you have turned to the Shepherd and Bishop of your souls"; Ps 23; Jn 10.

The true disciple of Jesus Christ, has in Him the model, the instruction and the training to patiently, in a way pleasing to God, deal with unjust suffering.

Remember if:

His responsibility, under divine grace and enablement, is to persevere and confidently apply the divine principles and truths you have heard (Phil. 2:12-13; 1 Tim. 4:7-9; Jas 1:22-27). As you meditate on this message, ask yourself:

· What does God want to transform in my way of thinking and acting?

· How can I put this into practice in my life?

· What is the first step I will take in this direction (so that there is real transformation in my life)?

Know... believe... Appropriate yourself... And, practice the divine truth so that you may experience the full life that is in Jesus Christ - Jo. 10.10

ALCOHOLIC BEVERAGE REMOVES SOBRIETY, GOOD SENSE. PEOPLE IN THESE CONDITIONS MAY FOR AWESOME REASONS GET INVOLVED IN ARGUMENTS, FIGHTS, STRUGGLES AND EVEN MURDER.

It is not rare that we see cases in the media of traffic accidents, traffic fights, arguments over football, jealousy fights with a partner that end in death. This is the devil's intention when inciting conflicting situations involving alcoholic beverages. Not to mention "good night cinderella" scams, thefts and cases of adultery that destroy families...

Wine is mocking

and the fermented drink provokes quarrels;

it is not wise to be dominated by them.

A breach is a hole, a crack, a vulnerable part in some structure or object. In the Bible this word appears with 3 distinct meanings:

Literal sense - slit

"Give a gap" - make room or space

"Stand in the gap" - like Moses (Exodus 33:22)

The expression "give a gap" means to give space or place for something to happen or someone to come in and intervene.

Know: Prostitution is a misrepresentation of the intimate and special relationship that marriage should be. Prostitution spoils that relationship and values ​​the wrong things: lust over love, childishness over responsibility, abuse over affection...

In the Bible prostitution also has a spiritual meaning. The infidelity of those who prostitute themselves is like the infidelity of those who abandon God to worship idols. God wants to restore relationships and hearts to be pure and faithful again.

God's will is that you be sanctified: abstain from sexual immorality.

1 Thessalonians 4:3

"Let no one dishonor his daughter by making her a harlot; otherwise, the land will be given over to fornication and will be filled with wickedness.

In the Bible, there are many warnings against immoral attitudes. Immorality is an offense to God, because He is holy. For this reason, God rejoices when people flee from immorality and live for his glory.

Immorality in the Bible:

especially those who follow the unclean desires of the flesh and despise authority. Insolent and arrogant, such men are not afraid to defame heavenly beings;

2 Peter 2:10

Outside are the dogs, those who practice witchcraft, those who commit sexual immoralities, murderers, idolaters and all who love and practice lies.

Revelation 22:15

Now the works of the flesh are manifest: sexual immorality, impurity and licentiousness; idolatry and witchcraft; hatred, discord, jealousy, anger, selfishness, dissensions, factions and envy; drunkenness, orgies, and the like.  TETELESTAI



"... having blotted out the writing of debt, which was against us in his ordinances, which in any way was contrary to us, and took it out of the midst of us, nailing it to the cross..." Col 2. 14.

"TETELESTAI" is a Greek expression that can be translated as "it is finished", "fully paid" or "debt canceled". In the first century, when a criminal was arrested, his misdeeds were recorded on a papyrus known as a "debt note" or "debt writing". When serving the sentence and when the time for his freedom arrived, the judge responsible for the release of the convict, crossed out the ballot, especially in the part where the crimes were pointed out, and, at the bottom, wrote TETELESTAI. Ready! The individual no longer owed anything to justice. He was free from condemnation and now he could enjoy peace and freedom.

The apostle Paul appropriates this juridical figure to convey to us the depth of the scope of Christ's redemptive work, because, as sinners that we are, there is also a "debt note" against us, namely, a series of transgressions committed throughout the life. This ballot constitutes a powerful instrument of accusation. It silences us, humiliates us, because there is no way to contradict it; there is no denying it. In it are recorded all our wickedness, all our lies, all the perversity we practice. It points to the destruction of those who are there (Rev 20. 12).

However, the apostle Paul declares that Christ "blotted out the handwriting of debt from among us, nailing it to the cross." That is, Jesus Christ with his vicarious (substitutive) death paid the debt we owed to God. It is worth remembering that on the cross of Calvary, according to the Gospel of John (19. 30), Christ declared “It is finished!” (TETELESTAI), even being his last word.

Finished! Fully paid! This is our true situation in Christ in what the satisfaction of divine justice consists. It doesn't matter what we've done. No matter the extent and gravity of our sin. In Christ Jesus “there is no condemnation” (Rom. 8:1).

So when bad memories from the distant or recent past come up and we feel guilty and threatened in our peace, just remember what Christ has done for us. Let us remember his last word about us: TETELESTAI! All our sins have been forgiven by the precious blood of the Lord Jesus Christ! This blood that scratched the ballot that was against us, freeing us from condemnation once and for all! Once and for all!

It is common to find Christians unsure about the fact that they do not feel fully forgiven by God. Some are under the impression that they need to pray one more time in order, who knows, to be truly forgiven by the Lord. However, the Holy Scriptures do not guide us to “feel the forgiveness” of God, but to believe that, in Christ, He has already forgiven us. Therefore, it is not a matter of feeling, but of faith in the person of Jesus Christ and in the effectiveness of the work that He has done.

Another issue that also torments some brothers is the fear that, depending on what they did in the past, they need to “break some curse” or “annull some pact”, because, otherwise, they will always be subject to some onslaught of satan and may have some sort of evil influence in their lives. Thus, for such, at any time, the devil can come “to collect the bill” and, therefore, it is necessary to participate in some cult or liberation chain.

This practice, although common, especially in neo-Pentecostal communities, is foreign to the teaching of the Holy Scriptures. Paul, says that the debt was cancelled, moreover, in verse 15 of chapter 2 of the letter to the Colossians, the apostle insists that “having spoiled principalities and powers, he made a public spectacle of them, and triumphed over them in the cross... ”

If in verse 14, Paul uses a legal scene, as we said above, in this he uses a military reality well known at the time, because when two nations went to war, it was common for the winning army to bring the defeated army to its territory and, in a public ceremony, the defeated soldiers had their clothes and other belongings removed until they were completely naked.

This stripping was intended to humiliate the defeated enemy, demonstrating that he was totally subjugated. This is exactly what Paul is teaching the Colossian believers! Christ defeated and humbled the devil, stripping him of any and all authority he had to accuse, tempt, and harm us. Christ made his enemies “the footstool of his feet” (Eph 1:20-22). We don't need to fear the devil. He is defeated, dispossessed, and humbled by the Lord Jesus Christ. The debt is paid! TETELESTAI!

All our sins have been forgiven! What good thing! All our curses were taken to the cross and there annihilated (Isaiah 53). How wonderful! We are free! Free to live the fullness of the life of Christ.

To Him and Him alone be praise, and honor, and glory, and power forever and ever!

The Meaning of the Male Pascal Lamb




It is wonderful to see how the LORD has built the Scriptures with such a vast body of information, arranged in several distinct and deep layers, in such a way that they surprise and ecstatic even the most dedicated and obstinate students of His word. It is clear that the Hebrew, Aramaic and Greek texts are rich in meaning, not only for the words themselves, but for what they represent so richly in their multiple meanings and symbologies, as well as for their numerical values ​​and structures that show the beauty, wisdom and majesty of the Supreme mathematician. In addition, it is also interesting how the LORD likes to play with words, making puns to hide part of his mysteries and purposes, in such a way that only with a knowledge of the original languages ​​one is able to perceive them... here is an example:

“Speak to all the congregation of Israel, saying, On the tenth of this month, each one shall take for himself a lamb, according to the house of his fathers, a lamb for each family. But if the family is too small for a lamb, then he will invite his nearest neighbor, according to the number of souls; according to what each one can eat, there you shall calculate how many are enough for the lamb. The lamb shall be without blemish, male ( זכר zakar ) a year old; you may take a lamb or a goat;” (Exodus 12:3-5)

In the passage quoted above there are several important and profound details, but in this article I will stick only to the word used to designate the flawless lamb of the Passover sacrifice by the people of Israel as being a male lamb, whose word in the original is זכר "zakar ” … the curious play on words here is that זכר zakar also means: remember, record, recall, bring to mind.

What then does this mean and what does it represent?! Well… when the Passover Lamb was killed, it implies that the “zakar” was killed… destroyed. And to kill the zakar is to end the memory, it is to destroy the memory, it is to erase the memory; no longer bringing the memories to mind. When the Messiah, the Christ, died on Passover as the Ultimate Paschal Lamb, He was also the zakar, the Lamb without blemish… the male Lamb… the zakar who bore our sins.

When Jesus died on the cross, it was the death of the zakar. When the zakar died, all memory of our guilt, of our sins and iniquities, was destroyed in the death of the zakar, and the memory of our shame is no more. That's why the prophet Jeremiah when he talks about the New Covenant promised by God, in chapter 31, he writes...

“For this is the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel after those days, saith the LORD; I will be their God, and they will be My people. They shall never teach each one his neighbor, nor each one his brother, saying, Know the LORD, for they shall all know Me, from the least of them to the greatest of them, saith the LORD. For I will forgive their iniquities and their sins I will never remember ( זכר zakar ).” (Jeremiah 31:33,34)

See how things are linked?! Notice the beauty of the “play on words” used by the LORD through the Hebrew language?! God emphasizes that in the New Covenant He would forgive the iniquities and sins of the people and that He would never remember them!!! When Jesus fulfilled the New Covenant, made through His blood (see Matthew 26:26-28), He granted that forgiveness, for He was the Lamb without blemish, male … ​​the zakar ( זכר ) … the One who would carry the memory (the record) and the “burden” of all sins and iniquities with himself to death… to destruction, where those memories, those recollections, would never come back to mind… that is not to say that the LORD would have “amnesia” and “forget” effectively from sins, after all due to His attribute of Omniscience, "forgetting" is something impossible for the Almighty; what is taking place here is a matter of law… of justice… that means that these sins have lost their damning power and can no longer be used to condemn you before the Just Judge of the entire universe, since your “recording for legal purposes” it was destroyed in the death of the Lamb, and now those who are signed into the New Covenant through Christ are freed from the condemnation of sin.

Understand this, when you accept the Messiah as your Passover Lamb, when you believe in the Son of God and the work done by Him on your behalf, then you are cleansed from your sins and your iniquities and the LORD will never bring them back to life. remembrance, you are free from the condemnation and power of sin. This is why the apostle Paul and the author of Hebrews write…


“Agora, pois, já nenhuma condenação há para os que estão em Cristo Jesus. Porque a lei do Espírito da vida, em Cristo Jesus, te livrou da lei do pecado e da morte. Eli was the high priest in the time of the prophet Samuel's youth. In addition to the priesthood, Eli also served as a judge of Israel for forty years (1 Samuel 4:18). Eli's story in the Bible was marked not only by his contact with young Samuel, but mainly by the rebellion of his children.

 

Eli was a descendant of Aaron through Ithamar

 

(cf. 1 Samuel 22:20; 1 Kings 2:27; 1 Chronicles 24:3) But his offspring are not named in the 1 Chronicles 6 list because of God's judgment on his family.

The priest Eli and Samuel

Eli ministered in the Tabernacle that had been raised in Shiloh after the time of wandering in the wilderness (cf. Joshua 18:1; Judges 18:31). He appears in the biblical narrative in the episode where Anna, Elkanah's wife, prayed to God for a son.

 

Initially the high priest Eli showed a certain lack of spiritual sensitivity by misinterpreting Hannah's attitude.

 

He thought that devoted woman was drunk (1 Samuel 1:14). But after she explained her reasons to him, Eli sent her away with a blessing (1 Samuel 1:17).

God granted Hannah's request and opened her womb. Hannah gave birth to Samuel and as soon as she fulfilled the vow she had made to the Lord. She took the boy to Shiloh to have a life dedicated to the service of God. This means that little Samuel was in the care of the high priest Eli (1 Samuel 3:1). Later, it was Eli himself who instructed Samuel in perceiving the voice of the Lord calling to him (1 Samuel 3:9). At that time Eli was already an old man (1 Samuel 2:22).

The sins of Eli's sons

 

Eli's Big Problem Was His Children

 

. He was the father of two unbelieving men, Hophni and Phinehas. As Eli was very old, his sons took on more and more responsibilities in the service of the Tabernacle.

 

 

But Eli's two sons had no fear of God and no respect for their father. They transgressed God's Law in many ways. They violated the regulations concerning offerings and sacrifices to the Lord, and they appropriated what was consecrated to God (1 Samuel 2:12). In addition, they seduced women who voluntarily engaged in some service related to the functioning of the Tabernacle.

 

 

The sinful and immoral practice of the sons of Eli was known throughout Israel and had a negative influence on the people (1 Samuel 2:22-24). The Bible shows Eli's pathetic attempt to rebuke his sons. But they were already seared in their minds by sin and had reached a level of hardening so deep that God's judgment on them was inevitable (1 Samuel 2:25).

 

God's Judgment on the House of Eli

 

Eli is always remembered as a tragic figure who had no control over his own home. Although he does not appear in the Bible directly participating in his children's sins, he ended up participating in them by omission. The fatal mistake that Eli made was to honor his sons more than the Lord. Furthermore, it seems that he ended up benefiting indirectly from the greedy behavior of his children (1 Samuel 2:29).

For all this God poured out his judgment on the house of Eli. Rather, He sent a prophet, about whom we know nothing, but who announced the judgment of the Lord. The man of God denounced the way Eli and his sons neglected the service of God and despised the great gift of the priestly office entrusted to them.

Then the prophet warned that the priestly lineage in Israel would no longer be counted through his house. In practice, this meant that the priestly lineage came to be considered through the descent of Eleazar, the other son of Aaron. This same message was again confirmed through the young prophet Samuel (1 Samuel 3:1-21).

God also warned Eli that his sons would die on the same day, and that he would be the last elderly man in his household. All others would die in their prime (1 Samuel 2:32,33).

Later, many of Eli's descendants were decimated during Saul's massacre at Nob (1 Samuel 22:17-19). In David's day, the descendants of the priests through Eleazar were twice as numerous as those who descended from Ithamar, that is, from the house of Eli (1 Chronicles 24:4). Finally, during the rule of King Solomon, Abiathar, who was a descendant of Eli, was removed from the priesthood and the house of Eleazar definitely prevailed (1 Kings 2:26-27).

Eli's death

Eli's death took place in a context of true tragedy. The Israelites were at war with the Philistines and the sons of Eli took the Ark of the Lord into battle as a kind of talisman. But the Israeli army was severely defeated. The two sons of Eli who held the Ark of the Covenant were killed and the Ark was captured by the enemy army.

Eli was sitting in a chair by the wayside with a heavy heart – especially on account of the Ark of the Lord that was in battle. He probably knew that the fact that his wicked children were responsible for the Ark couldn't do any good.

By that time he had already lost his sight. Then a messenger from the tribe of Benjamin came to him and gave him the bad news. The messenger reported that his children were dead and that the Ark had been taken.

Interestingly, what really provoked the reaction that killed Eli was the information of the loss of the Ark, not the death of his sons and the defeat of the Israelite army. The man who had spent part of his life giving more importance to his children than being zealous for the things of the Lord, ironically ended up dying when he showed greater concern for the Ark of God.

The Bible says that when Eli received the news about the loss of the Ark, he fell backwards from his chair and broke his neck. When his pregnant daughter-in-law, the wife of Phinehas, heard the bad news, he went into labor. She gave birth to a boy, and before she died she called him Ichabod, saying, “The glory of Israel is gone” (1 Samuel 4:21). She said this because she knew that her husband and father-in-law were responsible for the calamity in Israel with the loss of the Ark of the Lord. The high priest Eli died at the age of ninety-eight.

Eli's legacy

The Bible says that Eli judged Israel for forty years. It is possible that this period of Eli's leadership coincided, at least in part, with Samson's actions and the activities of other judges from that same period (cf. Judges 12-16). All this time he was in Shiloh.

Certainly Eli was marked in the Bible in a negative way. His conduct teaches us, mainly, about the danger of not watching over the work of the Lord. In other words, his life is a testimony that we must always prioritize the honor of God and not be oblivious to sin.

But one also has to recognize that there was some good in Eli's life. As R. L. Harris notes, Eli rightly exhorted Hannah to holiness and blessed her for her faith. Also, he certainly played a big part in Samuel's growth. In fact, he obviously did better with Samuel than with his own children.

Eli scolds his sons



Eli was already very old; and he heard all that his sons did to all Israel, and how they lay with the women who ministered at the door of the tent of meeting. And he said to them, Why do ye such things? for I hear from all this people your evil deeds. No, my children, this is not a good reputation I hear. You make the people of the Lord transgress. If one man sins against another, God will judge him; but if a man sins against the Lord, who will intercede for him? Yet they did not listen to their father's voice, because the Lord wanted to destroy them. And the boy Samuel grew in stature and in favor with the Lord and with men.

Prophecy against the house of Eli

A man of God came to Eli, and said to him, Thus says the LORD: Did I not indeed reveal myself to your father's house, while they were still in Egypt, subject to the house of Pharaoh? And I chose him out of all the tribes of Israel to be my priest, to go up to my altar, to burn incense, and to bring the ephod before me; and I gave to your father's house all the burnt offerings of the children of Israel. Why do you despise my sacrifice and my offering, which I commanded to be made in my dwelling, and why honor your children more than me, so that you become fat with the chief of all the offerings of my people Israel? Therefore says the Lord God of Israel: Truly I said that your house and your father's house would walk before me forever.
