Although the Book records the unexpected repentance of one of the greatest tyrants of ancient history, its greatest emphasis is on repentance or change of Jonah. Nineveh's repentance occupies a chapter, but the story of Jonah's preparation and subsequent training are presented in 3 chapters (1, 2, and 4) it seems that God had more difficulty perfecting Jonah than all the people of Nineveh.
When the prophet was led to the point of obedience, the revival occurred naturally. Jonas's preparation was carried out in stages. The fish's experience prepared him for Nineveh, but he needed more training to return to Israel. If the repentance of the city in chapter 3 surprises everyone, the disappointed prophet of chapter 4 causes us a shock. He seems to be more interested in his prophecy being fulfilled, as a credit to his profession, than the city of Nineveh is spared from divine judgment. This is how the story ends, leaving the reader completely disappointed in the attitude of the prophet. Jonas seems to be hopelessly selfish and fanatical, until we remember that he wrote without gilding his own image at the end. This image was obviously intended to impress and humiliate Israel, because the attitude of the prophet was a reflection of the attitude of the people.
