By the end of the century, Muslims will outdo Christians as the largest religious group on the planet, research shows

Islam is the fastest growing religion on the planet. By the end of this century, if the pace of growth continues, Muslims will outnumber Christians as the largest religious group.
This is shown by a survey conducted by the Pew Research Center, a research center based in the United States and dedicated to the study of several issues of regional and global impact. The study is part of a larger review on the subject, published in 2015 but updated last week.
According to the survey, Islam grows at a faster rate than other religions because of the combination of two factors: fertility rate, which is the estimate of the number of children a woman has until the end of her fertile period, and the fact Of this religious group being is "younger" than others.
Globally, Muslim women have about 3.1 children versus 2.3 women of other religions. In addition, followers of Islam are up to seven years younger than other groups. In 2010, the average age of a Muslim person was 23 years.
Muslims in the world
The analysis conducted by the research center brought interesting data. There are now 1.6 billion people in the world who designate themselves as Muslims. Although common sense considers that most followers of this religion are in North Africa or the Middle East, only 20% of them are in those places.
The majority of Muslims (62%) are in the Asia-Pacific region. The largest Muslim country is Indonesia. At least in the current day: in 2050, the study estimates, the country with the largest Islamic community in the world will be India, which today has as its largest religious group the Hindu.
Muslims in the US (and in Europe)
Today, on American soil, this group corresponds to 1% of Americans and 63% of these people were immigrants. By 2050, however, it is expected that Islam will become the second largest religion in the United States, accounting for 2.1% of the country's population. Already in Europe, the projection of the analysis for that same year estimates that 10% of the population of Europe will identify itself like Muslim.
Muslims x Extremism
The survey also evaluated the perception that believers of Islam have of the action of terrorist groups and religious extremism in general.
In Lebanon, for example, 100% of respondents said they saw organizations like the Islamic State with disapproval. In Jordan, the percentage was 94%. Only in Nigeria, which is home to the extremist group Boko Haram, is there a considerable number of people in favor of these groups (14%).
Most Muslims surveyed by the poll said they still condemn suicide attacks and any other forms of violence against civilians "in the name of Islam." In the United States, 86% of respondents consider these acts as unjustifiable.
In Muslim-majority countries, there is still concern about the threats posed by Islamic extremism. In Nigeria, 68% of respondents expressed this way. In Lebanon, this percentage was 67%.
