2 “The Lord of hosts, the God of Israel, says thus: They saw what I did to Jerusalem and to all the cities of Judah. It is because of their wickedness that they are now in ruins, broken to ashes, without a soul. 3 My wrath was enormous because they worshiped other gods, gods that neither they nor their ancestors had ever known. 4 I sent my servants, the prophets, to continually protest and urge them not to do this thing so bad that I reprove. 5 But they did not want to listen to me and convert from their wicked ways and continued to do the same, to burn incense to these gods. 6 So my anger was kindled and fell like fire on the towns of Judah, on the streets of Jerusalem, which are in perfect desolation to this day.
7 Therefore, now the Lord, the God of hosts, the God of Israel, asks you: Why are you destroying yourselves? Not one of those who came from Judah will live, be it man, woman or child, not even the breast babies. 8 For they have stirred up my wrath with the idols they have made here in Egypt to worship, by burning incense to them, causing them to destroy you entirely, making you a curse and a repellent smell to all the nations of the earth. 9 Have you forgotten the sins of your fathers, the kings and queens of Judah, your own sins and those of your women, in Judah and in the streets of Jerusalem? 10 Until this very moment there has been no repentance on your part; no one wanted to come back to me and follow the law that I gave to your ancestors.
11 Therefore the Lord of hosts, the God of Israel, says to you, My face burns with anger and I will completely destroy Judah! 12 I will take that remnant that came from Judah, who insisted on coming here to Egypt, and I will consume it. They will fall here on this earth, dying of hunger and because of wars; everyone will die, from the smallest to the largest. They will be despised, detested, cursed and hated. 13 I will punish you in Egypt, just as I punished you in Jerusalem, for war, famine and plagues. 14 Of the survivors of Judah, who came to live in Egypt, none will escape to be able to return to the land of Judah, to which they had a great desire to return; none will return but a small number of fugitives. ”
15 Then all the women present and all the men who knew that their women had burnt incense to the idols, answered Jeremiah. And there was a large crowd of Jews there in southern Egypt. They said: 16 “We are not interested in listening to these messages that you have announced in the name of the Lord! 17 We will do as we please. We will burn incense to the Queen of Heaven. We will present him with sacrifices, as many as we want, just as we have done ourselves and our fathers before us, just as our kings and nobles have always done in the cities of Judah and in the streets of Jerusalem. And in those days we even had plenty of food, everything was going well and we were happy! 18 But from the moment we stopped burning incense to the Queen of Heaven and stopped worshiping her, we have been in great trouble and have even been destroyed by war and famine. ”
19 And the women added: “Do you think we adored the Queen of Heaven, offered her our libations and made cakes in her image, all without our husbands knowing and helping us? Certainly not! ”
20 Then Jeremiah said to everyone, men and women, who had given him that answer: 21 “You think the Lord did not know that you and your fathers, your kings and nobles and all the people were burning incense to idols in the cities of Judah and in the streets of Jerusalem? 22 It was because he could no longer endure all the evils they were doing that he transformed your land into incredible ruins, into a cursed desolation and without inhabitants as we see today. 23 The real cause of all these things that happened to you was that you burned incense and sin against the Lord, refusing to obey him. ”
24 Jeremiah also said to everyone, including women, “Hear the word of the Lord, all the citizens of Judah who are here in Egypt! 25 The Lord of hosts, the God of Israel, says: 'Both you and your women say that you will never give up your devotions and sacrifices to the Queen of Heaven and have proved it through your actions.'
Well then, keep going and keep the promises and the vows that have been made to you! 26 But listen carefully to the word of the Lord God all the Jews who live in this land of Egypt: 'I have sworn by my great name, says the Lord, that it will not help to continue to seek my help and my blessing, saying: “As sure as the Lord our God lives, help us! ” 27 For I will indeed be attentive, but it is not for your good! I will be careful that evil happens to you and that you are destroyed by war and famine, until they are finished. 28 Only those who return to Judah, and will be only a small remnant of people, will escape my wrath. The others, those who refused to go back there and who insist on living in Egypt, will eventually find out who is speaking the truth, me or them!
29 And this is the proof that all the evil that I have promised you will happen to you and that I will punish you right here: 30 I will deliver Pharaoh Hofra, king of Egypt, into the hands of those who seek to take his life, as I gave Zedekiah, king of Judah, in the hands of Nebuchadnezzar, king of Babylon. '”
