US authorities, including the USGS, are warning the citizens who live in the southern portion of California about the real possibility of greater than 7.0 magnitude earthquake occur until October 5 on the west coast of the country.
The warning was given after an intense seismic swarm below Bombay Beach, California, called Brawley seismic zone at the southern end of the San Andreas fault tectonics.
According to the USGS, Geological Survey, the US, there are between 12:03% and 1% (1 in 3000 to 1 in 100) chance of the Southern California region is hit by a strong earthquake in the next seven days, with the possibility decreasing over time.
According to the USGS, this possibility was estimated using probabilistic models, calculated after a seismic swarm of 142 sequential aftershocks between 1.4 and 4.3 magnitudes were recorded from 26 September.
This battery tremors are occurring near a set of cross-fault tectonics in north-northeast direction, about 4 to 9 km just below the Salton Sea, a huge salt lake situated below sea level.
The warning of the possibility of a strong earthquake was also issued by CEPEC (California Earthquake Prediction Evaluation Council), a committee of experts set up to revise the forecasts of earthquakes and alert the governor of California on decision making.
For CEPEC, the earthquake risk may be even higher and reach 1.2% chance of a larger earthquake or equal to 7.0 magnitudes and placed in warning the cities of Ventura, San Diego, San Bernardino, Riverside, Orange, Los Angeles, Kern and Imperial, all in the southern portion of the state.
The northern Mexico is also on alert, they are as border and populated cities like Mexicali and Michoacan de Ocampo are located less than 100 km from the Salton Sea and also cut by the San Andreas Fault.

The Cascadia subduction zone is in the Juan de Fuca plate and the plate of North America and, to the middle of the 1980s, scientists had not fully aware of the danger it represents. This submarine failure can cause tremors of a magnitude above the nine degrees, accompanied by tsunamis like that which devastated the northern coast of Japan in 2011.
Lack of knowledge about the danger of the Cascadia fault was demonstrated a few days ago, after the publication of an article about it in The New Yorker.
